Item # OSL-22 Four Ohio State Heisman In 1994, Artists for Athletes did a limited edition art print that was a tribute to the Buckeye's first four Heisman Trophy award winners, Les Horvath, Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, Vic Janowicz, and Archie Griffin. Les Horvath after leading the Buckeyes to their first National Championship in 1942 went to dental school the next year and did not play football. Because of wartime rules Les was given another year of eligibility and came back in 1944 to become the university's first Heisman Trophy winner. He died in November of 1995. Vic Janowicz won the award in 1950 as a junior on a Ohio State Buckeye team that only went 6-3. Most football historians consider him the best athlete to ever play football for Ohio State. In one game during that season, he rushed for two touchdowns, passed for four more and kicked ten extra points. He passed away in February of 1996. Howard "Hopalong" Cassady as a junior led his team and coach, Woody Hayes, to Woody's first National Championship. In "Hopalong's" senior year, he played on both offense and defense to be voted the Buckeye's third Heisman Trophy winner and was also voted the 1955 AP Athlete of the Year. He is currently a coach for the Columbus Clippers baseball team. Archie Griffin is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice. He started in four Rose Bowls. When he graduated in 1975, Archie had rushed for over one hundred yards in 31 consecutive regular season games and set the career rushing yardage mark in the Big Ten. All of his awards are too numerous to mention in this article. He is currently with the athletic department at Ohio State. When this print was done Eddie George had not yet won the Heisman Trophy for the Buckeyes, so he is not pictured in the drawing. This 11 x 14 inch limited edition unmatted art print is one of only 1000 signed and numbered by the artist and not autographed. Very few of these prints have ever been seen by the general public. It will attract quite a bit of attention in your home or office. This is also a great gift idea for a loved one or a unique auction item for a charity fundraising event. Remember, the print being offered is without the autographs which is shown on the print above.
